Newman seeks to round out the experience of our students by providing them with opportunities to participate in competitive and intramural athletic teams. Athletics are a building block to help people succeed in all aspects of life from dealing with adversity to enjoying success while building strong minds and bodies. It is the process that is important not just the results. Belonging to the Massachusetts Bay Independent League and the Girls' Independent League (who are members of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), we field varsity sports in Baseball, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Co-ed Tennis, Softball and Cross Country. We also have Men's and Women's Crew with both squads being participants in the Head of the Charles Regatta and Coed Sailing which is a member of the Massachusetts Bay League and practices and races on the Charles River at Community Boating Inc. Fifty percent of the students participate in competitive sports teams. Students use the various athletic facilities available to the school within the City of Boston, including the athletic fields at Daly Field, Puopolo Field, Cassidy Field, Ebersol Field and the basketball and tennis courts of Basketball City and the Boston Athletic Club. The Crew team uses the MIT boathouse on the Charles River. School sports are carried on within the spirit of our school motto, COR AD COR LOQUITUR and the Four Cardinal virtues Justice, Prudence, Temperance and Courage. Coaches encourage the involvement of students in the respective sports as a means of enhancing their overall experience of the school. Teams are comprised of individuals with wide ranges of athletic ability. The emphasis is on learning each sport through participation in competition. Coaches approach athletes on an individual basis and encourage them to new heights of achievement.
